Program: Pot Luck Social to ring in 2012. All are welcome!!
If you weren’t able to sign up to bring a specific dish, just bring anything or just yourself and join in the fun with your fellow knitters!! There will be plenty of knitting, eating & socializing. We will also have a 50/50, so bring your dollar!

Location: Merrick Golf Clubhouse just East of Meadowbrook Parkway, Merrick Road East Exit, and 2nd right onto Clubhouse Rd.

Our "Winter Woolies" Tree at the Festival of Trees

The Festival of Trees was during the Thanksgiving weekend. Tuesday night a few guild members decorated our tree for the event and it came out beautiful! Here are a few photos of our tree with some of the beautiful ornaments we created!

Friday, around 12:30, guild member Gloria was on stage when they announced the winners. Unfortunately, we didn't win a ribbon and we are not exactly sure how they judge the winners, but our tree came out wonderful and is a winner to us! Proceeds for all donated trees benefit United Cerebral Palsy.

LIKCG'S WINTER WOOLIES
Here's our tree topper with some novelty eyelash yarn, with needles sticking out and five larger sweaters (that wouldn't fit into the ornaments) spelling out the word P-E-A-C-E.

Here's some of our ornaments. It was difficult to take pictures of all the ornaments and the tree. Our tree was in a grouping with two other trees.

Hello everyone! Just a little reminder that we are having Jack of Lion Brand Yarn as our guest this month. We haven't seen him in a while and are very excited for his return. In the past, he's brought samples of new and current yarns and explained how some of the yarn is manufactured. Please come a little early so you may find a seat. We'd like to start the meeting as soon as we can so he can go through his presentation. Afterwards, we'll have show and tell.

Hello all. Sorry for the absence! We had a little technical problem. All is well though and we will try to start posting again.

Much has happened since our last post I hardly know where to start...how about at the Huntington Sheep to Shawl Festival the board members attended on April 27. It was a wonderful experience! I highly recommend everyone goes next year.

Our next big event was our first bus trip to the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival. Can you say...

'sensory overload'? It was a great day. Here are some pictures:

It was a wonderful day of laughing, talking, walking, browsing, buying, touching and just being all together. One of the things I enjoyed the most was picking out a raffle prize. Each board member picked a little something up at the festival. On the way home everyone had a chance to win one of them. It was great fun. We are hopeful of planning another trip soon!

This month's meeting is our social Charity Knit Night and book discussion. One of our members generously donated 10 2011 knit/crochet calenders as door prizes. Everyone who comes will put their names into a hat and have a chance to win a calenders.

Gloria sends this message to all who participated in the Festival of Trees:

Thanks to everyone who contributed to our tree. Although we did not win an award the Guild was given a beautiful plaque of appreciation. Our tree was auctioned off on Sunday to a resident of Westbury for an undisclosed amount. A representative of UCP would not reveal the amount nor the name of the resident but the tree was auctioned off for more than $250.
I have received great feedback from many of our members who enjoyed working on this project. We have net year to participate, so stay tuned for more information in the months to come.

REMINDER - Festival of Trees

The 21st annual Festival of Trees to benefit United Cerebral Palsy is going to be held on November 26-29 at the Cradle of Aviation. Gloria got a 6' tree for the Guild and our theme is Snowpeople. We will be decorating the tree on Tuesday, Nov 23 at the Cradle of Aviation. Most of us will be there around 4pm. If you are free, it would be great to see you!

November 18 Meeting - Charity Auction Night

Hi everyone! Just wanted to remind you all that this week is our Charity Auction night. We have lots of yarn and books that we will be auctioning off. Last year was so much fun and exciting. I am looking forward to doing it again. Due to the amount of yarn we have to auction off, we will begin promptly at 7pm. The business and Show and Tell portion of our meeting will be postponed till next month. If you are participating in the auction, please wear a name tag to make tracking the sales easier. You may make your payments with cash (singles preferred if possible), or check. As we did last year, all monies collected will go to the Newsday Charities.

There will be a sign up sheet for the January Pot Luck dinner. This is a yearly event that everyone looks forward to. I love trying all the different yummy treats that people bring in so please consider signing up for a main dish, dessert or drinks.

I look forward to seeing everyone this week!

Our Next Book Discussion!

The LIKCG's Board was invited to a Newsday Charities event held on March 25, 2010 at the Long Island Children's Museum.

The guild donated the money collected from the charity yarn auction we had last year. At this event, we were informed about where the money goes, who receives it, etc. It was a wonderful event. Members of charity organizations came by to thank us for our donation. Below are a few photos taken from the event.

I am so excited for this weekend!

For members and guests to our Day of Learning event…Welcome! It’s going to be a fun day!

Check-in time will be around 8:30am. (I plan to be there between 8-8:15am to set-up.)
Mornings classes run from 9AM-12PM
Lunch immediately following with enough time to do some shopping as well, with the Local Yarn Shop, Infinite Yarns from Farmingdale. During lunch we will have a few raffle drawings.
Afternoon classes run from 2-5:00PM

IMPORTANT: Please fill out the comment surveys regarding your classes. It helps the LIKCG choose instructors and classes that you would be interested in for the future.

Here’s a list of the materials for all the classes, just in case you misplaced your supply list:

1. Candace Eisner Strick - 10 THINGS YOUR MOTHER NEVER TOLD YOU ABOUT (3 hrs.) (Morning)
Homework: Knit 2 swatches about 4” wide and 2” long. Keep both on stitch holders and attached yarn.
Supplies to bring to class: About 2 ounces of any weight yarn and appropriately sized needles; one set dpns in same size…
2. Tatyana Mirer -CROCHET EDGINGS (3 hrs.) (Morning)
Supply List/Materials:
• Yarn: Bring light colored sport weight yarn
• Hooks: Crochet hooks in size F or G
• Scissors
• Pencil and paper
• Tape Measure
3. Judy Pascale - SHAPELY SHAWLETTE (3 hrs.) (Morning)
Materials: For Class
• 1/4 of a skein of solid light color fingering weight yarn for beading.
• Size # 8 & # 9 needles either 24” circulars or straight needles can be used for samples.
• Ring markers to identify center.
• Split markers to identify front of Shawlette
Completed Shawlette Materials
• 450 yds (Medium)
• 500 yds (Large)
• Yarn Examples: Koigu or Cherry Tree Hill sock/fingering weight
• JitterBug by Colinette
Variegated yarns make a lovely Shawlette as well.
4. Candace Eisner Strick TWISTING INTO TEXTURE (3 hrs.) (Afternoon)
Supplies to bring to class: worsted weight yarn and appropriately sized needles, graph paper and pencil
5. Barbara Van Elsen - SWIRLS, TWIRLS, AND SPIRALS (3 hrs.) (Afternoon)
Supplies List
• A variety of yarns in one or two colorways, using the following as your base:
• One skein of a smooth yarn in each of two colors.
• Bring at least five other yarns, including some that are fuzzy (mohair, chenille, angora) and some with sparkles or glitz—novelty yarns are good.
• Most of these can be remnants—as small as several yards long. Feel free to bring extra to exchange and share with classmates.
• A pair of short needles—dpns are fine, though they don’t have to be—in size 6,7, or 8.
• If you brought dpn’s, then also please bring the same size (6, 7, or 8) 16” circular or straight needles.
• One G or H crochet hook.
• Optional: a small circular motif—something between 1.5 and 3 inches in diameter.
Of course bring your usual kit with scissors, tapestry needle, paper and pen for notes, etc.
6. Judy Pascale - BEADED CELL PHONE PURSE (3 hrs.) (Afternoon)
Materials:
• Skein of fingering weight yarn. Example: Koigu or Cherry Tree Hill sock/fingering weight yarn. Also, JitterBug by Colinette

• Two Tubes of # 6 beads 1 bag (200 beads)
• Susan Bates steel crochet hook # 9 / 1.25 mm

2009 Long Island Fair

Hi everyone! The subject of the Long Island Fair has come up at our last two meetings. It's held at the Old Bethpage Restoration Village every year. This year, it's being held on October 1st to the 4th. I've been to it before and it's lots of fun. There are many exhibits to see, and vendors to check out. It's also nice to walk around the village and see what it was like to live in that time period.

You may enter all sorts of things to the fair. For a copy of the booklet and entry form, click on the title of this post and it will take you directly to the Long Island Fair web site. They are accepting entries on September 29 from 8am to 6:30pm. I am going to try and submit at least one of my knitted objects.

August Charity Knit Dinner

In August, we had our annual charity knit dinner. We had a total of 295 knitted, crochet, and quilted items. Seeing all of these items on the table was truly an overwhelming experience.

There was a goodie bag for everyone who attended and donated a charity item.

There were also lots of wonderful things donated to our raffle.

This was a wonderful evening. Everyone had lots of fun and I hope that more members are able to join us next year.

A Look at the Library - August 2009

Crocheted Shawls, Vogue on the Go Series, c. 2007, is one of those compact books filled with great ideas for creating stoles, triangular shawls, gossamer lace and aran style wraps. There is quite a variety of crochet technique used, resulting in very creative and unusual patterns. I recognized a crocheted stitch that results in a very similar look to the dropped stitch pattern in “the Clapotis”; a Flower Spiral shawlette that resembles “the Swirl”, as well as several very delicate lacey beauties. Many of these patterns that are just knockout gorgeous.

Pursenalies and Pursenalities Plus, by Eva Wiechmann, c. 2004/2006 respectively, are a great team compilation of information about how to machine felt and create a very wide variety of bags. The first in this series explores 20 designs that manipulate color, shape, texture and stitch definition to make some special handbags. Ms. Wiechmann’s sequel take off from that point and adds felted add on embellishments such as flowers, manufactured handles, grommets, rings and chains to create very professional looking accessories. You will even find companion pieces such as cell phone holders, cosmetic cases and make up cases to compliment your creations.

Chic Knits for Young Chics, by Sarah Paulin, c. 2006, was kindly donated to our library by member Patti Paris. This book contains very solid, basic information including advice on combining color and texture; supplies a knitter would want to have access to; information on how to interpret the punctuation in patterns; casting on/finishing/seaming techniques; picking up those dreaded dropped stitches, etc. As the title aptly states, the project styles will likely please the “younger” crowd of novice knitters joining our ranks.

Very Easy Circular Knits, by Betty Barnden, c. 2007, was graciously donated by member Marge Geary. This book is a wonderful introduction into the world of knitting on circular and double pointed needles. The illustrations give meaning to “A picture is worth a thousand words.” In addition, it covers much basic knitting information that is also relevant to flat knitting technique including provisional cast on; picking up stitches; shaping with darts’ short row shaping; cables; Fair Isle; creating traveling lines; and even a stitch dictionary written specifically for knitting in the round. I found this last portion of the book to be extremely valuable since I, for one, am frequently confused when loving a stitch pattern written for flat knitting when what I want to do is knit in circles. The projects include bags, hats, gloves, sweaters, socks and pillows. Enjoy!

Teddy Bear Knits, by Mo Smith, c. 1987, is unusual in that it is both a story book that will appeal to young children, as well as a knitter’s instruction book. It features 16 sweater designs each of which represents one adventure in the plight of the plot’s protagonist, Jed, who is in search of the rainbow. The text is sweet and the illustrations are beautifully graphed intarsia and fair isles patterns! Imagine sitting down with your child or grandchild to read as well as choose a favorite design to craft into an heirloom memory!

Knits from a Painter’s Palette, by Maie Landra c.2006, features gloriously colorful vests, jackets, tunics, ponchos, scarves, and shawls of modular construction using Koigu brand yarns. If you have ever caught yourself looking longingly at the Koigu display in your LYS, you will enjoy reading about the birth, history and people behind the brand. The instructions for modular knitting techniques are well explained and illustrated. Your fingers will begin to itch with the prospect of picking a project that has been designed specifically to suit the character of these intriguing, handpainted yarns.

Exquisite Little Knits, by Iris Schreier and Laurie Kimmelstiel, c. 2004, contains a very interesting and wide variety of projects which are cleverly and uniquely arranged by the type of yarn required. Hence, the chapters include: Cashmere and Qivut, Eyelash and Fur, Silk, Lattice, Mohair and Angora, Ribbon, and Sequins. I found this book to be particularly interesting and useful when used as a learning tool to help develop that elusive ability to match, for example, that quirky ladder ribbon yarn in your stash to the type of design/project that best suits it. Better yet, you may even be able to partner some very unlikely fabrics, such as fun fur, sequins and metallics to make quite elegant apparel.

Ponchos and Wraps a Knitter’s Dozen, XRX books, c. 2005, contains many very lovely, fluid cover-ups that use a variety of yarn types, construction techniques and stitches. Worthy of special mention is the Sugarplum and Toffee shawl, touted as a “good choice for mindless knitting”, that utilizes novelty yarns that are woven into the finished garment. The result looks strikingly similar to the hand woven fabric you wish you could learn to make if you only had 48 hour days and an Ashford loom stowed away in your crafts loft.

Knitting New Scarves, by Lynne Barr, c. 2007 was so kindly donated to our library by guild member, Marge Geary. This is a wild book that takes scarf design to a whole new level. No more two dimensional knitting as in length versus width. Ms. Barr adds the third dimension to the equation as she instructs the bold to add depth by knitting up, out, around and through!! The results are awesome! Food for thought: we need to come up with a new formula to determine gauge now that we are entering the world of volume knitting!!!

The Long Island Knitting and Crochet Guild hosted it's first World Wide Knit-In-Public Day on Saturday, June 13th, at Eisenhower Park. It was a great time and a pleasure to meet new crafters!! We had approximately 50 guild members, new friends, and family come in throughout the day.

It didn't rain, only slight a drizzle. . .and the sun was out for a while. Hope Angela posts her pictures, here, as well. . . I forgot my memory card to my digital camera, but I was able to take a few pictures (below) with my phone.

A Look At Our Library April 2009

The following books were graciously donated to our library by Carla Scott at our March LIKCG meeting.

Knitting on Top of the World by Nicky Epstein, c. 2008, is an exciting book that is a treasure for our library to own. It is one of those volumes you wish you could display on your coffee table and be able to leaf through at any moment for eye candy as well as a history lesson. It is organized according to regions in which Nicky pairs gorgeous photographs to a detailed history of knitting traditions, techniques and styles from that part of the world. I, for one, was never a good student of history; but for me, reading about the geographic location, lifestyle and history of places such as Isle of “Aran”, “Fair Isle”, and Estonia brought such appreciation for those tiny knit/purl combinations I am learning. Within each of the six sections of the world, Nicky includes several projects that showcase that area’s unique contribution to knitting design, tweaked by a pinch of her own sassy style!

Grannies On the Go, published by Sixth and Spring Books, c.2008, is one of those adorable pocket sized books that will have crocheters grabbing their hooks and knitters admiring their sister craft. The projects range from using just one tiny, sequin embellished granny square to create a ring, to a multitude of granny squares used to make skirts, handbags, shrugs, capes, hats, blankets and scarves. There are several very sophisticated projects that use lovely color combinations in this book so please don’t pass it up!

Shawls Two on the Go, published by Sixth and Spring Books, c. 2008, is another pocket sized book that brings us 22 new shawls to consider making. There are some very avant garde pieces including Iris Schrier’s modular wrap (turned into shrug via the use of a purchased silk scarf and a couple of strategically placed tacking stitches). For those who knit for warmth, there is a beautiful cabled wrap as well as textured knits with clever edgings such as I - cord loops. Of course, there always are lovely lace pieces to choose from, one of which is an ethereal lace shawl fantastically embellished with beads, no pre stringing required.

Sorry, Hooked on Jewelry, by Pat Harste, c. 2009, crosses the line. Is it a bead book or a crochet book?!! You will love the jewelry here. As Ms. Harste states, “I love to crochet, and I love jewelry even more.” I was particularly drawn to the use of bead crochet to create focal pieces for necklaces and earring drops, rather than its more familiar use in tubular form for roped necklaces and lariats. There is a solid introduction containing information about the tools and materials needed including thread types, hooks, and jewelry findings. Now, isn't it wonderful when two passions meet, like bringing old and new friends together.

Crocheting on the Edge, by Nicky Epstein, c. 2008 is another super addition to the ever growing series of Epstein books, giving crocheters some wonderful ideas that knitters have enjoyed in the publication of her first three, Knitting (Over, On, and Beyond) the Edge. Buttons, ribbons, beads, pearls, and crystals embellish bobbles, ruffles, points, flora, and fringes. In addition to encouraging you to use these edgings to individualize your own projects, there are at least nine funky Nicky designs to explore, including jackets, vests, capes, shawls and belts.

World Wide Knitting In Public: Guild president Matty announced that June 13th is World Wide Knit in Public day. In honor of this, we will be having a picnic in Eisenhower Park. The Birches picnic grove has been reserved for the Guild. The picnic area is in a central location, near the restrooms, and miniature golf. All are invited including family, friends, and children. Bring your own knitting, food and beverages but please, no alcohol as it we did get the permit for it. Further details to follow as the date approaches.

Book Club: We are starting a 'Book Club'. The first book we chose to discuss is 'The Friday Night Knitting Club'. We are thinking of discussing it at our July meeting. More details to follow.

Welcome & Congratulations: We would like to welcome our newest members: Patty Coppola, Joan Doyle, Linda Gevarter, Laura Hyman, Janie Kaplan, Patricia M Rappaport, Mary Reardon, Dorothea Seidenstein and Stella Stamatiadi. Joanne congratulated Angela on producing a wonderful edition of Knit Knotes. Angela requested that if any member did not get the newsletter via e-mail or by USPS to please see her to provide the necessary information.

Library: Karen J informed us that she brought the books which members had requested with her. She also had some which she reviewed for members to borrow.

Charity Knitting: It was announced that St. Christopher's in Glen Cove would welcome any knitted items. The Guild received a Thank You letter from the veterans' home for the blankets which were donated.

Show 'N Tell: As usual we had many beautiful things show. Tracy showed off her colorful socks. Susan a baby sweater, hat and blanket. Angela showed her pair of Evangeline cabled mitts that were in the newsletter. Marlene, a cabled cardigan and shawl. Ilene, a ruffled scarf. Liz N, a colorful Noro belted cardigan. Anjanette, a wide headband with button.

Matty closed the meeting reporting that the nights attendance was approximately 90 members! She then welcomed our guest presenter, Carla Scott from Vogue Knitting. Carla proceeded to show us a slide show previewing the upcoming Vogue Knitting magazine. After her presentation, she let us ooh and ahh over the samples that were knit for the magazines. She very kindly gave every member a copy of the Spring/Summer issue of Knit Simple and donated several books to our library. It was a wonderful evening.

A Look at the Library - February 2009

Handknit Holidays by Melanie Falick, c. 2005, offers so much more than its title implies. Although dedicated to Christmas, Hanukkah and Winter Solstice, this volume contains more than 50 projects that make for wonderful year round knitting and gift giving. Only a few of the designs are actually holiday-specific, including: an ethnic fair isle/intarsia combination that results in an heirloom worthy tree skirt; an exquisite pillow, featuring a variety of decorative knitting stitches in the shape of a menorah, set against a reverse stockinette background; and a bobble laden adorable Santa Claus hat “brimming” with holiday spirit. I love the book because the designs are rich in learning experiences for a variety of knitting techniques. You will see bead embroidery embellishing feminine alpaca/silk gloves, modular techniques used to coordinate scarf to hat; a lace panel delineating the back seam of a pair of Victorian over-the-knee socks, and double knitting used to make an especially warm, reversible scarf. This book is a keeper!

Last Minute Knitted Gifts, c. 2004, is written by Joelle Hoverson, shop owner of Purl, located in Soho New York. This is a beautifully photographed collection that uses yarns carried in the store. The shop, as well as the yarns required, still exist and are readily available. The projects are very cleverly arranged in chapters according to the number of hours estimated for completion. So, thinking in terms of ETA (Estimated Time of Arrival), if you have 0-2 hours of knitting time, think about some adorable angora booties; 2-4 hours will result in Cascade 220 Leg Warmers; 4-6 hours for Blue Sky Alpaca Draw String Pouches; and some fabulous stuffed animals estimated to arrive in 6-8 hours! Who said knitting can not be fit into our busy lives?

Knitting Never Felt Better, by Nicky Epstein, c. 2007, may just as aptly been titled “Felting Never Made Better Looking Knits”. This book is rich with ideas that will take you and the felting process to totally new levels and way beyond the hot water cycle on your washing machine. Here you will see how to apply the felting technique to lace work, stranded knitting, intarsia, textural stitches, mosaic knitting, drop stitch knitting, and those beloved cables. In addition, the use of I-cords, beads and embroidery to embellish felted backgrounds is described and illustrated. Who knew that laundering woolens could result in such creative designs!

Sweater Design in Plain English, by Maggie Righetti, c. 1990, is a workhorse of a text, having survived 19 years in print and still proving itself to be a valuable source of information. This volume guides the reader through the basics of understanding how various fibers behave; knitting for specific body types; taking accurate measurements; choosing appropriate stitch patterns and colors; reviewing knitting techniques; and calculating the arithmetic necessary to execute well fitting garments. I enjoyed reading the book, page by page, rather than jumping “to the good parts”, because there is a lot to learn in each section. The second part of the book uses particular sweater projects as examples of how to formulate a pattern. Unfortunately, the designs are somewhat outdated but the principles and lessons are invaluable to those who hope to take that step toward designing original knitwear.

Jackets, by Jean Frost, c. 2003 is an XRX publication that I thoroughly enjoyed leafing through. Although the book contains mainly designs for jackets in the Chanel style, many stitch patterns are provided for creating interesting fabrics as well as edge details such as borders and slits. So, even if you don’t go for Coco’s classic, tailored look, consider applying some of these luscious woven textural fabrics and applied details to more unstructured silhouettes. I know I plan to!

____________________________________________________________________ Greetings From Knit Café, by Suzan Mischer, c. 2006, is the product of a young woman who is living out many of our own fantasies. That is, she left her stressful high power job as an executive at CBS to raise her children in Los Angeles. She soon became an avid knitter, honing her skills in a local Starbucks coffee shop after dropping her children off at school in the mornings. Like many of us, she dreamed of opening a yarn store for knitters to congregate and relax, complete with soothing beverages, good food, music, books and an eclectic mix of her own favorite yarns. The store opened in 2002 and welcomes knitters 7 days/week.

This book is a compilation of 30 projects that run the gamut from a yarmulke to a 28" X 70" pom pom awning! The book is quite entertaining to read as well as a bit off centered. If you are looking for staple projects this would not be my first choice; however, if you wish to surprise yourself or delight a friend with a computer keyboard cover, a bikini or a red carpet gown, look no further!___________________________________________________________________ Knitorama, by Rachael Matthews, c. 2005, is a collection of some of the zaniest projects I have ever seen and believe it or not, many of them are actually quite functional! Among the projects are cotton dishcloths, which can be washed and bleached repeatedly, are a great way to experiment with a variety of stitch patterns, and as stated in the book, are a way to “feel proud as you leave it draped and drying over the taps”. Fried Egg Ear Muffs (theirs are sunny side up) are crocheted and merely slip over your auricles. That’s pretty zany, right? In addition, there are shoelaces, duster gloves, apple protectors, sponge covers, booties to cover the ends of the drumsticks of your Thanksgiving turkeys and brassieres to choose from.

The projects that intrigued me the most are the knitted pastries, chocolate cake and ham sandwich which all look quite realistic and are sure to be conversation pieces, albeit lacking nutritional content! On a more serious note, the first part of this book contains much information on how to distinguish yarn content using a flame test, how to decipher the symbols on a yarn band as well as several ways to thread the yarn through your fingers to achieve optimal knitting tension. ____________________________________________________________________
Lion Brand Yarn: Just Socks, c. 2007, is a compact book containing both knit as well as crochet sock patterns. It is organized from simplest to more complex and utilizes the readily available yarns by Lion Brand.

At first I thought mainly beginner sock knitters would be best served by this publication. The patterns mostly call for yarns of heavier gauge than the traditional sock/fingering weight types. Upon closer look however, I realized that knitters of many skill levels might like the lovely Chevron Lace Socks, Striped Footsies (for those gals who wear tennis sneakers), and the Toeless Pedicure Sock. These would make special gifts for the friends and daughters in your life. I look forward to trying the Norwegian Style Footed Slippers which feature a variety of gorgeous fair isle patterns with only three colors to juggle. Thanks again to Lion Brand Yarns!____________________________________________________________________ 101 Designer One-Skein Wonders, edited by Judith Durant, c. 2007, is a book I have seen many times in bookstores as well as local craft outlets and I have always passed on purchasing it. Having to peruse it more carefully today, I see now that I really did not “get” what makes this volume unique and worth reading. The problem I had was that all the projects are pictured (3-4 per page) within the first 32 pages. You really need to study these photographs carefully to determine if you would want to knit an item because you don’t get any second looks or additional views of the projects before turning to pages 33 - 256 of printed instructions. However, once you decide, as I did, that you love the Christening Shawl, 3 Seasons Lace Vest, Rhea Lace Stole, Dogwood Blossom Wrap, Ruffled Neck Warmer, Horseshoe Messenger Bag, Cable Mittens, Cabled Baglet, and Cross Stitch Scarf, you will head for the chapters which, by the way, are organized by yarn gauge. Now that’s unique!____________________________________________________________________ Yarnplay, by Lisa Shobhana Mason, c. 2006, is a well organized book containing an introduction that discusses yarns, needles, and tools. The projects follow and are organized according to items for the household, clothing accessories, sweaters, vests and tank tops. The photographs are beautiful, plentiful and especially informative because they depict a variety of angles and details for each of the projects in this volume. The author is very specific about the yarns she chose for each project. So, if your stash happens to contain some very well known brands including Rowan, Araucania, Filatura di Crosa, Lorna’s Laces, South West Trading Company, Artyarns or Noro, you are in luck!____________________________________________________________________

Matty opened the meeting by welcoming new member: Lily Weir.

Board Vacancies:

At our last meeting a request was made for a Program Chair, and to date there have been no volunteers from the membership. In view of this, Meryle has volunteered. The floor was opened for other volunteers/nominations, No volunteers came forward thus Meryle was nominated, seconded and voted in as our new Program Chair. Her position as Librarian is vacant and volunteers were requested. Karen Joelson volunteered, was nominated, seconded and voted in as our new Librarian. Congratulations & thanks to Meryle & Karen!

Future Meetings: Important Reminder- February meeting will be Thurs. Feb. 19th (the 3rd Thurs of the month) since the Clubhouse is closed for Lincoln's Birthday. Vogue Editor Carla Scott is our guest for the March 12th meeting. Jack from Lion Brand Yarn is scheduled to be our guest for the June 11.

Knit Knotes: Matty apologized to the membership for the delay in the January newsletter, and hoped those with email got the meeting reminder in time.

Eileen mentioned a shop in Valley Stream is interested in doing a presentation, Llama farm owner, workshops or mini-classes. 2009 has been declared Year of Natural Fiber, so we will have programs with that in mind. Sheets were passed around to get an idea of members' interest in participating in the above or other activities.

Warm-up Knit: Liz had announcement for Warm-Up Care to Knit http://www.caretoknit.org/ Saturday 1/7/09 at 10am at Harbor Fields Library in Greenlawn. Squares will be knit.

Matty halted the business meeting for our delicious PotLuck Dinner after which we resumed for Show & Tell. Thank-you to our members who voluntarily stepped in to help set up the tables with the abundance of wonderful food, and also with clean-up after. Despite the cold night, our attendance was approx. 41, and the dinner was a huge success-Excellent Food!!!

Green Knit Knotes Thank You

LIKCG Minutes 12/11/08

The meeting was called to order by Matty.

The first order of business was to inform the members of a meeting cancellation policy. Members can call the clubhouse for cancellation information: 516-868-4650. The board will have a "Call chain" in order to notify members.

Charity Donations: All members with charity donations were asked to give them to the appropriate people. We have knitted approx 80 scarves for the Special Olympics.

Treasurer's Report: Barbara stated that to date, we have 70 paid members. Dues will be $20.00 until 12/31/08, and $25.00 beginning 1/1/09. There is presently $1690.00 in the treasury.

Board Vacancies: Unfortunately Eileen our Newsletter Editor and Jeanmarie our Program Chair have informed us that they will have to step down.

For Newsletter editor, Karen Sharp has volunteered, it was opened to the membership to see if there any others who would like to volunteer for the position. There were no volunteers, thus Karen was nominated, seconded, and voted in as our new Newsletter Editor. Congratulations!

The position of Program Chair was opened to the membership and there were no volunteers. Matty asked that members please think about the position and it will again be brought up at our next meeting. Denise Liebenstein (pardon if your name is incorrect) said that she could help with the mailing if needed.

Greeter/Check-in: We need someone to greet and check-in members/guests, and collect dues at the door. Crystal and Marion volunteered to share this responsibility. Thanks!!!

Potluck Social: Our next meeting on Jan 8, 2009 will start the new year with a Potluck Social!! Please sign up to bring your contribution to our dinner. Beth opened the meeting with a request for a guild member who would volunteer to do a short presentation to a Christian Women's group on a Tues at 11:30am. She would talk about the Guild, it's mission, projects, events, etc, and possibly show some of our knitted items. There would be no payment, but lunch is included. Beth thinks it is at the Washington Inn in Roslyn. If interested, contact Beth for information.

Bus to Webs: Gloria has contacted a bus company re cost. Meryle gave a presentation on Webs Yarn Outlet and Bead Outlet in Northampton MA. The ride is 3hrs each way, and 6 hrs at the stores. With 55 people (members & nonmembers) the cost would be approx $25.00 per person. The date: 12/27, the Sat after Christmas. A sheet was passed around to determine the interest in such a trip and a notice was put up in Ravelry. Please leave a comment here if you are interested.

Library Books: Meryle requested that books be returned after 1 month of use, as there are members waiting for specific books.

Membership: Dues for 2009 is payable thru 12/31/08 for $20.00. Beginning 1/2/09 the dues will be $25.00. We are trying to be a little “greener” and save a few trees so please note on the membership form to check the box if you want to get a hard copy in the mail rather than the Knit Knotes via email.

Special Olympic Scarves!!

Congratulations to all the LIKCG members and friends that have participated in making scarves for the Special Olympics. The guild has collected over 50+ scarves and more to come. . .

The guild will be collecting scarves until the last December meeting, so that they can be shipped in time for the Special Olympics. So if you have any scarves that need to be finished,. . . let's get them done!! Stay tuned for our final count of scarves. . .

The Long Island Knitting & Crochet Guild

In 2007, The Long Island Knitting & Crochet Guild celebrated its 25th Anniversary!

We have over 100 members, and average approximately 50-60 members attend each meeting. We formerly met at the Westbury Public Library, but in 2008, found a new home at the Merrick Club House in Merrick, NY.

This guild is an affiliated guild of The Knitting Guild Association (TKGA).
Here’s a sample of what we do throughout the year:

All knitters and crocheters welcome!. . .from novice to experienced.
We bring our own projects to knit/crochet, we share patterns, assist others with problems.
We have excellent guest speakers from the industry who offer a presentation or demonstration on knitting and/or crocheting techniques. Our recent guest speakers have included Carla Scott, executive editor of Vogue Knitting, Knit Simple, and Knit.1 magazines; Jack Blumenthal, Vice President of Lionbrand Yarn Company, designer Lily Chin, to name a few. . .

SHOW-N-TELL is a fun part of the meeting, where members show-off their work, what type of yarn they used, share patterns, and tell stories.

REFRESHMENTS. Volunteered members provide light snacks and beverages at each meeting.

CHARITY!! Most importantly, we knit and crochet for different charities. Members create different items like, hats for children and adults, preemie hats, scarves, lap robes, shawls, baby blankets and afghans, helmetliners and socks for our servicemen in the military throughout the year. Some of our charities to which we contribute: "Warm Up America" - afghans for the needy, "Caps for Kids" – washable hats for kids to adults in shelters, "Precious Pearls"- preemie caps, sweaters and small blankets, "Seaman's Institute" – scarves and hats to merchant seaman, "Ships Project" – hats, socks, slippers to American troops, "We Care Blankets" – for children being treated with chemotherapy.

WORKSHOPS. We have Member-to-Member Workshops. Our advanced knitters and crocheters conduct workshops teaching a special technique, a new way to use patterns and yarns, etc.

ANNUAL DINNER. We have a Pot Luck Dinner every year where members display their culinary talents with entrees and desserts.

ANNUAL CHARITY DINNER. We host an annual Charity Dinner at a local restaurant, for our August guild meeting. To qualify for a door prize, members and guests are required to donate a charity item they’ve created.

DAY OF LEARNING. We host an annual Day of Learning event in the Fall each year, where we have instructors come and teach us something new. This is an all day Saturday event. A class in the morning, a break for lunch, and a class in the afternoon. This year’s event was held on Saturday, October 4th, 2008, at the Marriott Residence Inn, in Plainview. The instructors were Barbara Kerr, Tatyana Mirer, Judy Pascale, and Barbara Hillary Van Elsen. The classes are beaded knitting (an all day class), lace knitting, crochet techniques: color and texture, mistakes and how to fix them, and reversible knitting. This event is open to the public. Of course, guild members receive a discounted price for this event.

OTHER EVENTS: When we get information about other knitting and crocheting events in the area, we share them with our members and attend events together or just meet up. Some of the yearly events, to name a few: NY’s 2nd Annual Stitch N Pitch which was held in September, NY Knit-Out’s held in Union Square, Big Apple Knitting Guild Retreats, Rhinebeck Sheep and Wool Festival, Square of the Month Club at Infinite Yarns in Farmingdale, Panera’s in Carle Place.

VISITORS: Prospective members are always welcome to come for one visit and bring a friend. We hope you will decide to join us. NOTE: Please keep in mind that a few events may be restricted to members only.

MEMBERSHIP – Annual dues (from January-December) are only $25. We start collecting membership dues for the upcoming year in October. As a member of the LIKCG you are entitled to:

1) Our monthly "Knit Knotes" newsletter sent out to our members every month to inform members of present and future events, the program for the upcoming meeting, free patterns for our charities, knitting/crocheting tips, yarn sales, etc.

2) LIKCG membership card - some of the local yarn shops give discounted prices to our members.
3) LIBRARY – access to the guild’s books, magazines, and patterns that are in our library.
4) DISCOUNTED PRICES – not only to our events but to some of the other NY guild events, as well.

Membership paid during the year will be as follows:

WHERE AND WHEN DO WE MEET? We meet the 2nd Thursday of every month at the Merrick Golf Club House, in Merrick from 7-9PM, right off the Merrick Road exit of the Meadowbrook Parkway.

October 9th Meeting - Members Teaching Members

Our October 9th Meeting was Members Teaching Members.

First we all sat down and heard the latest news.

Next up was show and tell:
Then it was on to Members Teaching Members.
Judy was teaching the Magic Loop technique.

Alice was giving instructions on how to make the Clapotis which can be found on http://www.knitty.com/

Crystal was showing us how to make single or double pointed needles with chopsticks, sandpaper and markers.
Anjanette brought tons of tools and beads to show everyone how to make their own stitch markers.

As always, this meeting was a big hit!
